Types of Study Abroad Programs

Carroll University offers several ways to study abroad while completing your Cross-Cultural Experience (CCE) requirement and earning credit toward your degree. Explore the program types below to find the option that best fits your academic goals.

Exchange School Programs

Study at an international institution with which Carroll University maintains an exchange agreement. Exchange programs offer the opportunity to take courses at a partner institution and transfer approved credits back to Carroll.

Affiliated Programs

Study Abroad Application Requirements

Follow the steps below to prepare for your study abroad experience. Some steps may take several weeks, so start planning early.

1. Explore Your Program Options

  • Review the available exchange and affiliated programs to identify options that fit your academic interests, destination preferences, and desired length of study.
  • By studying abroad, you can fulfill your CCE requirement and earn transfer credit for approved coursework.

2. Review Transfer Credit Options

  • Before committing to a program, consider which courses you need for your degree. Are you looking for a specific course, a Pioneer Core (Pio Core) requirement, or elective credit?
  • Complete the Transfer Credit Approval Form to determine how courses abroad may transfer to Carroll. You will need course syllabi to complete the form.
  • Allow a few weeks for the review process. The results can help you determine which program best fits your academic needs.

3. Apply Through the CCE Website

  • Once you have decided which program you want to pursue, submit your application through the Carroll CCE website.
  • Review the application deadlines to ensure you submit your materials on time.

4. Complete the Program Provider Application

  • In addition to the Carroll CCE application, you may need to complete a separate application through your selected program provider or host institution. Follow the instructions and deadlines provided for your program.

5. Request Your Carroll Transcript, If Required

  • Some programs may require an official Carroll University transcript as part of their application. Order your official transcript if required by your selected program.

6. Plan Your Finances

Review the costs associated with your program and explore funding opportunities before making your final decision.

Carefully reviewing program costs and available funding can help you plan for your time abroad.

Need help creating an application or accessing an existing application?

  • Acceptances are on a rolling basis as long as the student meets the requirements of the study abroad program.
  • Students should also consult with their faculty advisor on how courses in a study abroad program will impact their future course schedules.
  • Acceptances can sometimes happen after the CCE deadline, as long as the program still has room and students can submit required materials on time.
  • Students will need to fulfill two applications for study abroad: the CCE website for University approval, then apply to the program itself.
  • You can have two CCE applications (this includes both study abroad and Travel Course CCEs) active at the same time per term.  Click here for instructions on how to withdraw and apply to a different program.
  • CCE acceptance emails and further study abroad instructions will be sent to your Pio email.
  • Students attending a semester program will be billed a $420 study abroad administrative fee when term charges are implemented.
  • Students attending a summer or J-term program will be billed a $180 study abroad administrative fee when term charges are implemented.
